2012 MILITARY HISTORY LECTURE SERIES - Beginning in February the lectures will be the 1st Wednesday of the Month (Except MAY, NOV & DEC) Sponsored by The Friends of the Pennsylvania Military Museum. Scrool to the bottom of the page for links to other Area Events.
January 14 – DOCUMENTARY FILM: “You Enter Germany – Bloody Huertgen and the Siegfried Line” Between September 1944 and February 1945 thirteen U.S. Army divisions fought for control of a 50 square mile area of dense forest along the German border. This battle was the longest single battle in American history and largest defeat of the U.S. Army in January 28 - CABIN FEVER FILM SERIES: "When Trunpets Fade" Loosely based on the combat action of the 112th Infantry, PA National Guard in World War II, this 1998 Home Box Office production follows the lives of four infantrymen as they struggle to stay alive in the Huertgen Forest along the Siegfried Line in November of 1944. (92 minutes; R rating for strong language) Donation Requested $$- 2:00 p.m. February 01 – LECTURE: Memoirs of a Vietnam Veteran; Clyde Hoch, Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, Vietnam Tank Commander and Section Leader, and author will present his experiences from enlistment through his service as a member of Co. C, 1ST Tank Battalion, 1ST Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, in Vietnam and his return home. 7:30 p.m. February 25 – CABIN FEVER FILM SERIES: “Go Tell the Spartans” Based on the 1967 novel Incident at Muc Wa by Daniel Ford, this 1978 HBO production stars Burt Lancaster as a career army officer serving as an advisor within the Military Assistance Command in Vietnam (114 minutes R rating for strong language) Donation requested – 2:00 p.m. March 06 - Central PA Civil War Roundtable Lecture: "Fort Sumter-First Blood in South Carolina" by Joe Mieczkowski; It was where the Civil War began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate artillery opened fire on the Federal fort in Charleston Harbor. Union forces would try for nearly four years to take it back. Mr. Mieczkowski will discuss the fateful events of that day as well as Fort Sumter in 1862. 7:00 p.m. March 07 – LECTURE: FDR-Dewey: The 1944 Wartime Presidential Campaign; Dr. Stanley Weintraub, Evan Pugh Professor Emeritus at the Pennsylvania State University, will discuss his new book, “Final Victory: FDR’s Remarkable World War II Presidential Campaign,” due to be released Summer of 2012. 7:30 p.m.March 11 - CHARTER DAY - Museum reopens to the public with FREE ADMISSION on this date to commemorate the granting of the Charter from Charles II to William Penn which founded “Penn’s Woods” in 1681. *Annual NOTE: Museum hours are Wednesday thru Saturday 10am to 4pm, Sunday Noon to 4pm; Closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Open on all summer hoildays. April thru November - EXHIBIT: "Foodways" Museum admission required to view exhibit. April 03 - Central PA Civil War Roundtable Lecture: "The Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas" by Dick Simpson; March 7-8 is the 150th anniversary of this two-day western battle where the Union Army of the Southwest commanded by General Samuel Curtis met the Confederate Army of the West on two separate battlefields on the plains of Pea Ridge. 7:00 p.m. April 04 – LECTURE: Army Operations; Michail S. Huerter, LTC, U.S. Army, U.S. Army War College Speakers Bureau, Description TBD 7:30 p.m.
National, Commonwealth and division flags are carried in ranks by members of the 28th Infantry Division in preparation for the annual Celebration of Service event.
April 14 & 15 - BATTERY B DRILL WEEKEND - The Civil War Era re-enactment group of the 3rd Pennsylvania Volunteers will encamp on the museum grounds demonstrating the loading and firing of replica period artillery pieces while they conduct their yearly safety qualifying session and recruitment drive. Interested persons of all ages are invited to enlist. Noon till 4pm *Annual
Members of the 3rd Pennsylvania Volunteers, Battery B, demonstrate the loading and firing of their guns during the annual recruitment drive and Spring training session held each April. May 01 - Central PA Civil War Roundtable Lecture: "First Stride of the Giant - First Days of the Peninsula Campaign" by John Quarstein; Mr. Quarstein is an award-winning historian, preservationist and author of seven books. May/June marks the 150th anniversary of the Virginia Peninsula Campaign pitting Federal Major General George B. McClellan versus Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston. 7:00 p.m. May 02 - LECTURE: NATO's Afghanistan Training Mission (preliminary); Keith A. Detwiler, COL, US Army, US Army War College Speakers Bureau. Description TBD 7:30 p.m. May 20 - A CELEBRATION OF SERVICE: HONORING PENNSYLVANIA VETERANS - U.S. Army reunion and memorial service sponsored by the Pennsylvania National Guard commemorating the Pennsylvanian Citizen Soldier. Activities include a military band concert, distinguished speaker, helicopter/vehicle displays and a twenty-one-gun, 105mm howitzer battery salute. Call ahead for itinerary. Hours – 12:30pm to 3pm. This is an AW (All Weather) event - Rain or Shine. *Annual May 26 & 27 - "WORLD WAR II REVISITED" - American and German WWII reenactors will bivouac on the grounds of the Pennsylvania Military Museum portraying field life in the European Theater of Operations, 1944-45. A small squad tactical demonstration against German opposition is scheduled for 1pm each day. Bivouac and tactical open to the public 10am till 4pm. This is an AW (All Weather) event - Rain or Shine. *Annual
May 26 - SERVICE CANTEEN - The "Andrew Sisters Tribute Show" will entertain the troops at the annual WWII Combat Bivouac on the museum grounds. Heidi, Erin and Serah of First Flight Entertainment blend the 3-part harmonies of the original sisters act into a brilliantly choreographed show with the dance and comedy reminiscent of the era. Admission to the show is free.
The "Andrews Sisters Tribute Show" from First-in-Flight-Entertainment wowed the GI's and home front crowds at the 2011 Memorial Day Weekend living history event.
May 28 - ALLEGHENY MOUNTAIN REGION A.A.C.A. CAR SHOW - Local Regional Antique Automobile Club of America Chapter’s annual summer season kickoff event featuring many pre-war through modern classics on display throughout the grounds of the 28th Division Shrine Complex/PA Military Museum. June All Month - T-Shirt Tour Weekends - Wear an Armed Services themed t-shirt to the Pennsylvania Military Museum on any weekend in the month of June and receive a guided tour at 1:00 p.m. for $4.00! June 06 – LECTURE: Belgium Under German Occupation in World War I; -During the First World War, Germany occupied large parts of northern France and most of Belgium. These areas became a theater of operations for secret intelligence networks by the Allies. The German secret police pursued these networks and executed hundreds. Dr. Sophie De Schaepdrijver, Associate Professor of Modern European History, Penn State University, discusses her current book project, which studies the life, work, and remembrance of a young woman, Gabrielle Petit, against the backdrop of military occupation, secret intelligence networks, and divided postwar memories. 7:30 p.m.June 14 - FLAG DAY CELEBRATION - The State College Elks Lodge and local veterans organizations will sponsor a joint Flag Day Service and U.S. Flag Retirement Ceremony on the grounds of the 28th Division Shrine. The public is encouraged to bring their unserviceable American Flags for the proper disposal. Free Admission 6:00 p.m. *Annual July 04 - OPEN FOR BUSINESS July 10 - Central PA Civil War Roundtable Lecture: "Building a Winning Team on the Western Rivers" by Bruce Apgar, Cmdr, USN; From Belmont, MO through Forts Henery and Donelson, U.S. Grant and Commodore Andrew Foote formed a land/water partnership that laid the foundation for the Confederacy to be split in two. February 2012 marks the 150th anniversary of the battles of Forts Henry and Donelson. 7:00 p.m.
July 12 to 15- PEOPLE’S CHOICE FESTIVAL OF PENNSYLVANIA ARTS - Annual arts and crafts festival featuring the best of Central Pennsylvania’s artisans. Parking $$ *Annual July 21 & 22 - "VIETNAM Revisited" - Living Historians portraying American combat and support troops in Vietnam will interpret the late 1960's "in country” in Southeast Asia on the grounds of the Pennsylvania Military Museum. Daily programs include the oportunity to accompanying squads on short range patrols and two tactical patrol ambush demonstrations at 1pm and 3pm each day. NOTE: Sandals and shorts are not recommended for those wishing to accompany patrols. Bivouac open 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. This is an AW (All Weather) event - Rain or Shine. August 07 - Central PA Civil War Roundtable Lecture: "24 Hours at Manassas Junction; Second Manassas Campaign" by Mark Trbovich; August 28-30 will be the 150th Anniversary of the Second Battle of Second Manassas which was the culumination of an offensive campaign waged by General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia against Union Major General John Pope's Army of Virginia. 7:00 p.m. September 04 - Central PA Civil War Roundtable Lecture and Picnic: Attendees are invited to bring a covered dish for the annual outdoor dinner beneath the picnic pavilion. Linda Estupnian Snook is the guest speaker with a talk titled "Not Frail Flowers - Six Pennsylvania Women Who Made a Difference in the Civil War." 6:00 p.m. beside the main parking lot. September 08 & 09 - "Then & NOW" - Visit this Living History Time Line of Uniforms and Equipment from the Colonial Period thru the Present. 18th and 19th century fashion show begins at 1pm followed by the 20th and 21st centuries at 2pm with a historic weapons demonstration at 3pm. November 10 - KIDS DAY: Dress Up and Discover!! - Kids of all ages get to try on the field gear and head gear from the museum education collection. Have your parents bring their cameras, cell phones and IPods as you pose at one of three backdrops in the museum theatre. Visit the education stations in the galleries for more fun discoveries throughout the day. 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Ages 03 to 13 get in for 1/2 price admission. A donation is requested for the Dress-Up station. Parents need to remain on-site. November 11 - OPEN Veteran's Day 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. November 13 - Central PA Civil War Roundtable Lecture: "The Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee" by Matthew Atkinson; This battle on April 6-7, 1862 would become the bloodiest contest in American history up to that time as Union Generals grant and Buell beat back the surprise attack of Confederate forces led by Generals Albert Johnston and P.G.T. Beauregard. 7:30 p.m. November 25 - OPEN Black Friday; the day after Thanksgiving 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
