Liberation and Loss: America and the Holocaust

This engaging lecture by historian Jared Frederick will offer unique perspective on Americans' perceptions and reactions to the Holocaust in Europe from the 1930s through the 1940s. Additional perspective will be offered via the story of Sergeant Fred M. Weakland, a central Pennsylvania GI from the 80th Infantry Division who was among the first American soldiers to help liberate a concentration camp. This powerful presentation will remind us how and why this tragic moment in history still offers many lessons. Frederick will be signing copies of his various books following his talk.

Jared Frederick is an Instructor of History at Penn State Altoona. A former park ranger at Gettysburg National Military Park, his latest book is Dispatches of D-Day: A People's History of the Normandy Invasion. Learn more at www.jaredfrederick.com.
