Life in the Navy Band

Join Meg and Dan Smith as they discuss life in the Navy band, including training, duty stations, travel, and special events such as Fleet Week New York and the Royal Edinburgh Tattoo. They will share information regarding the history and mission of Navy bands, as well as personal anecdotes from their combined twenty-eight years of service.

Meg Pedlow Smith, a native of State College, earned degrees in Music Education, Musicology, and Conducting from Penn State University. She has taught music in the State College Area School District and Lock Haven University, and is currently the Director of the Bellefonte Community Band. She served on active duty as a musician in the United States Navy for eight years at duty stations in Virginia, Italy, and Rhode Island.

Dan Smith grew up on a farm in Jefferson County, PA. Following completion of a degree in trombone performance at Philadelphia College of Bible, he entered the United States Navy Music Program. In addition to his official role as a trombonist, Dan performed extensively as a featured vocal soloist during his twenty-year career. He retired from the Navy in 2017, having served in Illinois, Italy, Louisiana, and Rhode Island.

Lecture sponsored by the Friends of the Pennsylvania Military Museum. Lecture will take place in the theater, seating is first come first served, donations appreciated.
